Hi Valkyries,

The good news is that Simon is back from holidays and will be running coached sessions from next week.

So this Thursday I am suggesting a little social ride, all rugged up in your new winter cycling gear, before the serious work starts again. 6am at the ANU. Route to be decided by consensus on the day, or by me if no-one turns up.

Then the best part. A social catchup with Simon and Valkyries at Cream in town at 6pm on Thursday evening - unless anyone else has a better idea for a venue?

Let me know if you are planning on riding on Thursday and/or coming to the catchup.

Cheers Natasha

The Willo Enduro was run today in the Wingello State Forest.

Organisation was exemplary, with parking next to the course and food/coffee available at race HQ.

I raced the 75k event which was 3 laps of a 25k circuit. The course consisted of fire roads linking some spectacular single tracks. Single tracks ranged from quite twisty technical sections to fast and flowing trails between luscious green grass trees under a tree canopy complete with large tree ferns in gullies and huge banksia trees in bloom.

Most of the climbing was on fire roads. Interesting in the tight stuff my old 26'er was really fast and responsive, but I had a hard time keeping up with the 29er's on anything open.

Dylon Cooper won the 75k event in 3hours and 8 minutes. That is a really impressive ride as I was taking about 1 hour 20 per lap and scraped on on the 4hour mark making it into the top 20 M40+ masters.

From a road perspective it is very interesting doing an event which was about an hour longer that the longest road event that I've done. That 4th hour really sapped me and it was all I could do to keep the pedals turning over in my shortest gear on anything that resembled a climb.

Definitely a worthwhile exercise for anyone who wants to test and improve their endurance, see some nice scenery and ride somewhere different!

Well another Frank Long is done and dusted with a podium finish for yours truly. It was a quieter affair than previous years with just under 60...

Well another Frank Long is done and dusted with a podium finish for yours truly. It was a quieter affair than previous years with just under 60 riders taking part in the senior event. There were about 5 or 6 bunches heading off with limit heading off around 15 minutes before scratch. I was in the middle bunch, just 6.5 minutes after limit and surrounded by riders from HCC (Hamilton Cycling Club) and just one other rider from Camperdown. All strong guys and keen to help me out. The handicapper had told me earlier he was bound to get either a local win or a Long over the line with the bunch and I was counting on his predictions.

We headed south initially on a 40 k out and back course, struggling into a strong head-wind with rolling hills but a generally down-hill profile. The bunch stuck together well and there was very little rest to be had and no respite from the wind as turns at the front were quick to come back around. The climb out of Byaduk Nth tested the bunch a little but we kept it together with some solid turns but consistent tempo. Once the climb is done there is a good descent with a strategically placed turn-around right at the bottom. It gave everyone a chance to see where the bunches ahead and behind were situated and it became apparent that all bunches ahead of us had become one.

The climb back seemed to put pressure on the bunch with four of us taking the lead and keeping an even tempo in the hope the entire bunch would reform near the top. It finally did but in retrospect we should have made a move then and there and put the heavier riders behind us. The bunch found it difficult to get back into good shape from then on and only got itself organised once we'd gathered the bunch in front of us in. A new pace-line formed with several of the riders from the earlier bunches taking part. All good as far as form was concerned but the pace had now slowed and we had seen the remaining bunches (now also formed as one) descending to the turn-around as we were climbing back up! It was time to get moving.

A sprint point about 7 k's for the finish was the key. Some riders near the front surged to take the money and it was clear there was more energy in the bunch than was being spent, so I attacked and brought the remains of my initial bunch and just a few hangers on through to form a new pace-line, dropping a few of the slower riders. Only a few of us then took turns to keep the pace up and keep scratch from catching. With about 5 k's to go, one of the HCC guys offered to let me attack on the next hill and he promised not to chase, hoping I'd get away on my own and ride to glorious victory. I hesitated at the idea, knowing I'd struggle out there on my own and probably not keep the hounds off my wheel for a full 5 k. Nevertheless, the two of us pushed the pace over the hill in the hope we'd pop a few more riders but everyone hung on.

From there on it was just miserable. The bunch slackened and pace-line died and I came to the front to keep the pace up. I knew I had no chance of winning as failure to keep moving would have scratch on us soon but it seemed entirely down to me to drive the bunch. Doh! I should have attacked again but the chance was now gone. I stayed on the front for about 3 k's, feeling pretty good but knowing it was going to come down to a sprint.

The final 1.3 k's of the race is a slight incline after crossing the railway tracks. I switched off after checking I couldn't see any sign of scratch and let a small handfull of riders roll past me, holding 4th or 5th wheel. The bunch slowed and everyone jockeyed for position. I moved right and sat as close as I could to the double white lines in the hope riders would stick to the rules and not overtake me on the right, picked a good wheel and waited for the sprint.

The sprint kicked with only about 400 metres to go, but sure enough I got boxed in by someone coming up on the wrong side of the road. I missed the first two riders as they gained a bike length but managed to kick again and pass two more riders and just come across the line for third.

Extremely happy to have made the podium in the Frank Long in its 62nd year and great to have ridden with such a great bunch of HCC riders who have all been riding or running the Frank Long for years. HCC riders Brian Hayes took out the line honours with Simon Povey close behind and me in third. Both riders were amongst the strongest (and obviously smartest) in the bunch and deserved their placings. Fastest time was won by the same rider as last year, D Woolley off scratch. The strong headwind on the way out kept average speeds down but I can assure you it was hard!

Of course the family were chuffed and it was great to head back to the club rooms for a good chin-wag, a few beers and presentations. I'll be back again next year.
