I'm racking my brains for good flat stretches of road for threshold efforts. I have a couple of spots for 3mins, but can't think of any for longer efforts. Federal hwy is the fall back, but its actually not that flat.

Flat (ish)
5+ km
relatively quiet (for afternoon training efforts)
no lights/major intersections etc.
easy to turn around and do repeats

Any ideas??

If the side of the road wasn't so littered with crap I would suggest the GDE.

There is the 5km speedo check on the Monaro. Not sure how much crap is in the bike lane though.

wallaroo road, off the barton highway near hall. It's a bit far to ride if you don't live in gungahlin/belco.

It is a quiet country no-through-road, and if you are a serbian orthodox christian, there is a church there for you.

Boz I am surprised that you would think Wallaroo rd to be flat.

It's farking crapola on the city-bound side but reasonably good on the Tuggers bound side. However, the 5 k section now has a set of lights in it for the gaol, although you can probably back it up a bit towards Fyshwick to get a good flat 5 k's in. Then the bike lane turns to crap again though!

Hmmm Lake George - sth bound in the arvo, nth bound in the morning ... 18kms (?) dead flat Geary's gap to Collector - and a good warmup on the way out??

agree with Ben. If you get there at the wrong time there is soooo much traffic you can't hear yourself think or dodge the course gravel shoulders. Except for starting beside Lake George I can't think of a nice 5km stretch.

Mulligans Flat Rd (back of Sutton/Gungahlin)
Uriarra Rd (Homestead to Uriarra)
Nanima Rd (though not completely flat, a couple of small rolling hills)
Drake Brockman Dr (wide and smooth, bit of traffic though)

Not sure if these roads are long enough?

The Bundadome!? (Narrabundah velodrome)

Yep - that would be perfect... who can a steal a key from? Seriously, I was even considering ducking out to Qbyn track.

Drake Brockman is perfect for 3 min intervals (for me) and frequently has a nice tailwind (good for learning how to really push yourself).

Not sure about the key situation at the Bundadome. Need to find out myself.

What about using the lower end of the crit track? That's relatively flat.

This might be a bit hilly (Sutton to Gungahlin), it's sorta a false flat but feels steeper than Homestead. Should be a nice ride in the other direction though.

Watch out for the black & white attack bird about halfway along...

What about Adelaide Ave (Lodge to Yamba? roundabout)? Probably need to ride it early in the morning rather than the afternoon though because of the traffic.
