Vikings Crace Nocturne Criterium

On Saturday 28 May, Vikings will be running a “Vikings Crace Nocturne Criterium”, on a NEW CRITERIUM CIRCUIT!

The Major Sponsor is Crace Joint Venture, with NiteLights also sponsoring the event.

We will be raffling of a set of NiteLights bike lights, valued at $220, amongst all competitors. http://www.nitelights.com.au/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=6&Itemid=1

This will be a fully-closed street circuit, in the evening, under street lights. No residents or parked cars. Residents will move in a few weeks afterwards, so this is the only opportunity to race this circuit.

Other locations may become available in future, but only if this one is well attended. Bring your mates!

The location is Crace.

16:00 Juniors roll away for 20min+2laps
16:30 WC/ME for 20+2
17:00 WB/MD for 30+2
17:40 WA/MC for 40+2
18:30 MB for 50+2
19:30 MA for 60+2

There will be prize money. $30 for 1st, $20 for 2nd, $10 for 3rd. This will be increased depending on the number of entrants. There will be separate prize money and results for the womens and mens grades.

Unlike SFP, this course will require you to stop pedalling to go around some corners.

Front and rear lights are optional for juniors and required for all other grades. No flashing lights. A UCI commissaire will be present to inspect bikes and equipment.

Also there are toilets, coffee service and BBQ. Race entry is $10, free for juniors.

Dress warm. CA licence required. 1 lap = 800 metres.

This will be great preparation for the ACT criterium Championships, on 4 June, in Kingston.

I guess now that I've got a racing license I better use it, so I'll be there. Just to clarify, is the no flashing lights for front only, or for both front and back?

Hipster
16-05-2011, 10:21 PM
I only just found out that mine actually has a "stay on" setting which is exciting, I thought it only did slow, double and fast flash. And here was me thinking I'd have an excuse to buy something more from the LBS!

Probably also need to circulate the details - start/finish street location to google groups to ensure we get numbers! This should be great :)

A Brief Explanation of the Difference Between Hay and Straw:

Hay: Any of several nutritional grasses and legumes, such as alfalfa or clover, that is cut, dried, and then used as fodder for farm animals.
Straw: Hollow stalks of grain (such as wheat), used mostly as bedding and garden mulch, but which is also used as feed. Straw has less nutritional value than hay. And if you ask a cow, she'll say that it doesn't taste as good, either.

Thanks for coming out Matt, Steve and Bos. Look for some vikings jerseys on Win TV tonight and in the CT tomorrow.

Tha's cool Lee, thanks for trying. Maybe this is an issue for us on the weekend? Are the directions clear? It is pretty easy to find off Gundaroo rd. Just take the barton to the big roundabout, right onto Gundaroo and then 1st right into crace and the sales office is there. Park at the sales office and ride to the course.

Also steve? Where is rego? At the sales office or the course? Maybe we should be getting as much at the sales office as we can?

Not trying to stir any pots here but you really ought to stick to the advertised program.

Even if one or two A graders turn up half an hour prior to their advertised start time and they find out that their grade was combined and already racing, they'll be a tad shirty.

It's better to turn up to a small field and race on time than no race and several disgruntled punters. Reliability is key to getting people to show up (in future).

Thanks Steve, Rob and all the other organisers and marshalls it was a well organised event. The only slight downside was the fw builder that decided to drive on the course in the middle of a race and then through/over the barriers. Hope you reported him to the police, Steve, technically he ran you over. From what I saw (and probably mnay others) you were standing there trying to talk to him and he bumped you out of the way.

I agree, and I'd particularly like to apologise to Andrew Lake and Tom Behrens who did not even get a chance to jump on with B grade for a few laps. At the very least I could've given some advice to show up early to register before B rolled away.

Sounds like this was a successful event. I wish work hadn't canned my leave and I could have raced it too.

The other downside that is often overlooked when combining (for example) A and B grades is that often there are many B graders walking away after getting spat out the back. Leaves them scratching their heads, wondering if that is something they'll bother to do again should grades be combined at late notice.

Lets have more crits! :)

A couple of thoughts:
Having to slow down for corners was awesome, scary, infuriating, tiring and bloody hard work!
Much more than Stromlo there is a benefit from picking a good wheel to stick on. I was on one guys wheel for a fair bit of the C Grade race and he kept dagging off on the corners which meant that we had to catch up even more out the other side. I knew I didn't want to be on his wheel out of the last corner as there would be no chance I would overtake any more riders than him.
It's much more a race to the last few corners as much as a race to the line. I think our grade finished in exactly the same order we went down the long straight before the last corner. If I'd been thinking I would have absolutely smashed it down that straight and gotten to the last corner in a better position - next time.

Hold. That. Wheel. The first 10 minutes of our race was absolutely balls-out stuff and I was pretty knackered at that point but I just took it one corner at a time and about 2 laps after I thought "there's no way I can keep this up" the whole group started to slow up a little to something more manageable. The first time I had a chance to look at the time board 13 minutes had gone by! Just keep on the wheel in front of you and watch for gaps in front of them. If they start dagging off, blast past them and get on the wheel in front.

I had a blast, can't wait for Wagga!

Thanks Andy, I was on your wheel for probably 90% of the race. Good wheel, consistent pace though I wasn't game to try and overtake (undertake?) on the right because a couple of times I did start to nose up you shut the gate on me and I decided that descretion was the better part of vallour. There wasn't really any room on the left in the short straights to overtake.

That guy in the Route 7 kit was funny I thought. Every few laps he would do a Ninja attack and come from near the back to at or near the front and then the next lap he would get spat out the back again. Not sure where he finished in the end, he quite possibly had the last laugh and finished in front of me.

I was just keeping a steady pace and trying not to do any more work than I needed to, just happy to be still with the main bunch, especially considering I'd just raced Honeysuckle about an hour before! Unfortunately the race went for one lap more than my legs wanted it to and a couple of guys slipped past me on the last lap, but at least I didn't finish last, I was quite happy with my result in the end, especially as I don't normally do crits and also that I was racing C instead of D.

Thanks Andy! (but please wait for the full race report next time)(in case the results need a tweak)(so as not to enrage the punters)(on the off chance)

Yep, let them know there was a report on the way. Didn't think they'd jump to it that quickly to be honest!
