I really would like to know what you think ,i'm running Super record 11 -11-27(Love it) .Would i really notice i lot of difference ,if i was to buy the cassette i also have to buy a conversion kit to change the derailer as the 11's before Oct 2009 aren't truly compatiable .
I don't feel the love from hills anymore ,but ok on the flats .

I suspect you will notice the larger jump between gears more. That is always the down side. If you need a 29 I would recommend going compact, you get better gear spacing.

I used to run a standard double and a 12-27 and managed to get up Hotham, Honeysuckle and Fitzs etc OK and for most other hills I rarely used the 27 (but there is a big jump from 24 to 27 on the 10spd). I really can't see that you should need a 28 or would gain much from it. I'm now running a compact (50) and a 11-25 on my race wheels, 12-25 on training and it feel pretty much the same except you don't get the big gaps you get on a 12-27 (would be worse on a 11-28) so its easier to find the 'right' gear. I'm even thinking a 11-23 for most races without big climbs would be enough with the compact.

No gaps eh??

The 12-27 includes- 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,25,27 - 2 tooth jumps, 17 to 27
The 12-29 includes- 12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,26,29 - 3 tooth jumps 23, 26, 29

(I couldn't find any 11-27 or 11-29 super record cassette's to see where the jumps are, but there has to be an extra one somewhere).

Because 11 - 27 is SPECIAL .

Lee, i ran a 12-27 11 speed Campy cluster for the Alpine 250 in Jan. I managed to ride up the back of Falls where it seemed like 75% of riders were walking (ask Dan), which has some pretty nasty pinches. I did find I was spinning out a bit on the 12 back in town ie heading down into Cotter but didnt notice any nasty jumps.

You'd have to be doing some pretty serious hill climbing in terms of both steepness and length to warrrant the 12-29 I reckon...I'm considering it if I take the road bike to the Dolomites!

Lee,

I've found the solution to all your problems! (Well, at least those related to your need for a Campy 11-29 cassette!)
